CFUW-Oakville is one of the 130 clubs that make up CFUW. It was formed in October 1949 with 54 charter members. We have now have over 240 members.
Our 60th anniversary is 2009/2010. We have many activities planned.
Our
Activities:
- Monthly meetings with interesting speakers;
- 30+ interest groups;
- Funding and awarding scholarships;
- Special community projects; and
- Provincial and national conferences.
- To promote the pursuit of knowledge and education;
- To participate actively in public affairs;
- To provide an opportunity for fellowship, support and networking; and
- To provide scholarships to women in the community.
Education: To assist in developing a sound concept of educational values and in maintaining high standards of public education; to encourage continuing education for women through the granting of bursaries and awards.
Public Affairs: To arouse and sustain among members an intelligent interest in public affairs in the educational, political, social and cultural fields; to encourage active participation by women in such affairs; to provide an opportunity for the expression of united opinion and effectual concerted action; to be concerned with human rights and with the economic, legal and professional status of women in Canada.
Community Service: To foster a sense of responsibility and to encourage university women graduates to place their education and professional training at the service of the community.
Networking: To provide an opportunity for social contacts and the friendly interchange of ideas and information among university women graduates in the community.
About CFUW
Founded in 1919, the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) is a voluntary, non-partisan, non-profit, self-funded bilingual organization of 10,000 women university graduates in Clubs across Canada. CFUW members are active in public affairs, working to raise the social, economic and legal status of women, as well as improve education, the environment, peace and human rights for all.
CFUW establishes its policies at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) where members debate resolutions developed at the grassroots level. Following the AGM, delegations from CFUW meet with provincial and the federal to governments to present the CFUW Policy Brief.
CFUW is a founding member of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW), an organization of 71 national affiliates with a membership of over 180,000. Through IFUW, CFUW provides support for women worldwide, in their pursuit of higher education and economic stability.
CFUW has consultative status at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York and sends a delegate to the March meeting.
